What is Supplemental Instruction?

According to The International Center for Supplemental Instruction at University of Missouri Kansas City, supplemental instruction "consists of regularly scheduled, voluntary, out-of-class group study sessions driven by students' needs." Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs) and Embedded Tutors (ETs) are peer and professional tutors who run these sessions, helping students not only with the materials they're learning in their class but with their learning processes overall.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs) are peer and professional tutors who attend class, familiarize themselves with its materials, and run weekly study sessions focused on the concepts or topics students are learning about. SI sessions are a great way to dedicate time to studying with the benefit of a knowledgeable tutor on hand.

The Academic Success Center offers supplemental instruction in the following sections during the Winter 2025 semester:

* NOTE: Although the Supplemental Instruction Leaders will be attending these specific sections, most SI sessions are open to any student enrolled in those courses.

Embedded Tutoring

Embedded tutoring is another form of supplemental instruction, but it differs a little from the traditional model. Embedded tutors (ETs) may attend class sporadically—for example, during peer review sessions in an English course—and provide broad supports for reading and writing. They do not hold study sessions; however, students can make an appointment with them anytime and benefit from their knowledge and familiarity of what is being taught in the classroom.
